About Us

Sonrise Acres was established in 2014 as a result of a dream of Jason's to get back into the sheep business and allow our children to have the opportunity to show and raise livestock. We purchased our first three ewes in 2015 and have not looked back since!

We currently maintain a flock of 50 Southdown ewes and a few crossbred females we have kept from successful show seasons. Our Southdown genetics are largely Forsee based as we have the utmost respect for the focus they have placed on developing sound females. Our goal is to produce a moderate Southdown that balances eye appeal, style and soundness with athleticism and heavy muscling to compete in the show ring at the national level. We also understand that in the end, we are producing a consumable product and strive to make a Kentucky Proud end product that is healthy, nutritious and filled with flavor for the end consumer.

Jason grew up in Lexington, Kentucky where he had the opportunity to participate in the Fayette County 4-H lamb club at the farm of Jim and Judy Mahan. Here he developed his love for sheep and the passion for showing livestock. Throughout his 4-H experience, he also participated in livestock judging and was a member of the Kentucky 4-H All-Star Gold Livestock Judging Team in 1993. During Jason's show career, he was awarded the Commissioner's Trophy at the Kentucky State Fair in 1993. With a degree in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky and later going back to school and currently working as an Emergency Room Physician Assistant, he enjoys combining his animal health knowledge with medicine to care for our flock.

Cara grew up in Lexington, KY where she met and later married Jason. Her expertise as a Doctor of Pharmacy at Rood and Riddle Equine Pharmacy is a welcome addition to the farm and valuable resource for maintaining the health and well being of our stock. She is stock show Mom extraordinaire and helps keep everything running during lambing and Jason's hospital shifts!

The current farm crew of Madelyn, Caroline, Silas and Anna-Grace participate in all aspects of our operation and compete with our stock at local, regional and national shows. When not on the farm or in the ring, you may find them in the dance studio or competing with the Locust Trace FFA Chapter.

Conveniently located just off the interstate in the Horse Capital of the World in Lexington, Kentucky, we are positioned to serve show families across the United States. We look forward to the opportunity to serve and help showman with our stock as so many have helped us along the way.

Our farm name Sonrise Acres reminds us that God's mercies are new to us with every sunrise. We are reminded with each beautiful sunrise at our farm of God's son Jesus who died and rose for our sins. Through our work and ways we pray that our small farm offers the privilege of giving witness and sharing our success to the glory of God.

"And whatever you do, do it with all your heart as if you were doing it for the LORD and not for men".
-John 3:23
